Construction Scaffolding

LOCATION:

Willmott Dixon are a nationwide construction company established in 1852. They are one of the UK’s largest privately owned companies in the construction, regeneration and support services with a turnover of £1bn+. They specialise in all types of construction works from house building to the construction of complex industrial sites and also work extensively in the refurbishment of existing buildings and sites. This project was located in Leicester City Centre at Leicester City Hall.

APPROACH:

Rilmac Scaffolding initially received this enquiry in July 2013 This project required a great deal of planning from the outset using drawings of the existing building. We were required to scale off these drawings to ascertain how much scaffolding was required to provide working platforms to the entire building. The roadside elevations required extra planning due to a concrete plinth which protrudes approximately 2 meters from the building.

Several site visits were required in the planning stage to appreciate the environment we had to work in to erect the scaffold and to ensure the most suitable method of safely erecting the front elevation of the building. The front elevation had to be extensively back propped underneath the concrete plinth and a beamed section was erected on the concrete to carry the substantial load of scaffold that it needed to support.

The building is situated on one of the main thoroughfares in Leicester and therefore extra planning and care was needed to ensure the safety of pedestrians was not compromised. One of the safety measures taken was to fully ply board all the scaffolding on the ground.

Following the awarding of the contract a complex design process began with each drawing being checked by an external auditor. The time and effort taken in the planning stages ensured the smooth erecting of the scaffold with all eventualities considered.

On completion of the external scaffold on the roadside elevations, the scaffold was enclosed in ‘Envirowrap’. This provides a fully enclosed working platform and extra protection to the public.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS:

This project involved extremely tight deadlines which we met by using extra manpower and resources. Meeting the deadline enabled the client to access the scaffold and begin the refurbishment works without delay.

We believe the standard of workmanship and aesthetics of the finished product in such a prominent road in Leicester City Centre helped maintain the clients position as one of the top construction companies in the UK.
